"Navigating Toward Your Personal trueNorth"
We specialize in working with two broad client groups: pre-retirees and retirees. All of our clients are looking for objective, unbiased advice; the most pressing issues they face usually depend on the stage of life they are in.
Pre-Retirees
This group of clients is targeting retirement within the next ten years. They are very focused on that goal:
•They want to understand their financial position with more certainty than they may have
needed in the past. They want to know whether their nest egg will support their desired standard
of living in retirement, or whether they may need to make adjustments while they are still in their
peak earning years.
•They want clarity on the cash flow issues they will be facing as retirees: for example, when to
take Social Security, how much to budget for health insurance and health care costs during retirement,
and how to handle the impact of inflation over a long retirement.
•They want professional help managing their portfolio as the time horizon for actually spending from
their accounts shortens. They want to simplify their financial lives by consolidating their accounts at
one financial institution and hiring an investment manager to implement and monitor an investment plan.
•They are looking for objective advice on long term care issues and long term care insurance,
and want to understand the potential impact of those costs on their long term financial security.
•They may be considering early retirement, and need to understand how to take distributions
from their retirement accounts without incurring penalties.
•They are inheriting money and don’t feel comfortable managing their inheritance on their own, or simply
don’t have the time to do so.
•They are receiving lump sums from the sale of their businesses, and have the same issues.
Retirees
These clients have accumulated their nest egg and achieved many of their financial goals; their primary concern is managing their money to ensure the funds last through a long life expectancy:
•They want professional help managing their portfolio to preserve and grow their assets
while creating a retirement income stream.
•They want assistance in deciding how to take an employer’s pension: whether to take an
annuity, and if so, which type of survivor benefit to take, or whether to roll the pension to an IRA.
•They want help evaluating whether to roll their 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan balances to
an IRA upon retirement. If these plans represent the bulk of their retirement savings, they want
an investment advisor to manage that nest egg.
•They want advice on how to handle longevity risk – the risk that they will be in
retirement for 30 or 40 years.
•They want to make sure they are spending from their taxable and tax-deferred accounts
in a tax-smart manner.
•They want to understand what level of annual distributions their portfolio can sustain,
and how to plan for the impact of inflation over time on the amounts they draw.
•They want to understand what level of gifting -- to children, grandchildren, or charity -- their
net worth can support.
•They are considering retirement living options, such as continuing care retirement communities,
and want to understand what their financial assets will allow, and the impact on their net worth of
different living arrangements.
